Physics 173 Internet Question of the Week

The Questions

September 22 - September 26, 1997

Question #1:

Use a major search engine to locate a web site for the Exploratorium Science Museums. Describe the search path which you used to find the site and indicate the address of the site. Then browse through the museum until you find an exhibit or other information which deals with the topic of refraction. Identify the name of the exhibit and discuss the physics behind how the exhibit works.

Question #2:

Use the index of refraction of diamond to determine the path of the following light rays through each individual gemstone of diamond. Show all measurements of the angle of incidence and reflection (or refraction) at each surface. Show your calculations - the critical angle calculation and the Snell's law calculation for the exitting of the ray from the gemstone.
