Physics 173 Internet Question of the Week

The Questions

March 23 - March 27, 1998

There are three questions this week. The first question is a search question and the last two questions are physics questions. Each question is worth one point.

Question #1:

Use a major search engine (HotBot , Lycos, Alta Vista, Excite, etc.) to find a site titled the Theatre of Electricity (part of the Museum of Science site in Boston). Once you find the site, visit the Van de Graaff generator section where you can read about the world's largest Van de Graaff generator (you'll find this section if you follow the exhibits link from the home page of the museum). Do some on-site reading about the generator and summarize your findings in a short paragraph.

Question #2:

Use complete sentences to explain why Julie's (or Lauren's or Young's or Emily's or Katie's or Judy's or ...) hair stands up when she places her hand on the Van De Graaf generator.

Question #3:

Determine the electric field intensity experienced by a 1.5x10-8 C charge when placed 0.85 meters from a Van de Graaff generator which possesses 6.8 x 10-5 C of charge and stands at a height of 1.60 meters. PSYW
