Unit 5: Work, Energy and Power

Problem Set A

Problem 5:

Anna Litical is doing the It's All Uphill Lab. She applies a 17.9-Newton force parallel to the inclined plane in order to pull a cart up a hill inclined at an angle of 53 degrees. If she drags the cart a distance of 1.39 meters, then how much work (in Joules) does she do upon the cart?

• Read the problem carefully and diagram the physical situation
• Identify known and unknown information in an organized manner
• Take the time to plot out a strategy prior to beginning the solution
• Identify an appropriate formula to use
• Perform step-by-step algebraic manipulations

Work, energy and power concepts can be reviewed on the Set A Overview page.

Further information about the concept of and equation for work is available online at The Physics Classroom.
