Problem 4:

The detective uses skid marks and other accident scene measurements to determine that the 741 kg Yugo and the 941 kg Volkswagon were traveling with a velocity of 11.3 m/s immediately after the collision. Determine the pre-collision velocity (in m/s) of the Yugo. (The Volkswagon was orginally at rest.)

• Read the problem carefully and diagram the physical situation (collision diagram)
• Identify known and unknown information in an organized manner (list on diagram)
• Take the time to plot out a strategy prior to beginning the solution
• Identify an appropriate formula to use (or use a momentum table)
• Perform step-by-step algebraic manipulations
