Unit 3: Motion in Two-Dimensions

Problem Set E

Problem 9:

Use the diagram below to assist in your problem solving. A 117-Newton force is being applied at an upward angle of 29 degrees (theta) to accelerate a 33.1-kg box across a horizontal surface. If the surface is frictionless, then determine the magnitude of the acceleration (in m/s/s).

• Read the problem carefully and diagram the physical situation (free-body diagram)
• Identify known and unknown information in an organized manner (write on diagram)
• Take the time to plot out a strategy prior to beginning the solution
• Identify an appropriate formula to use
• Perform step-by-step algebraic manipulations

A discussion of basic principles related to Set E and Fnet = m•a problems is provided on the Set E Overview page.

Detailed information and examples of Fnet = m•a problems are available online at The Physics Classroom.
