Unit 3: Motion in Two-Dimensions

Problem Set C

Problem 15:

An airplane is traveling 884 meters above the ocean at a speed of 123 km/hr. The plane wishes to drop a box of supplies to shipwrecked victims in the water below. In order to have a successful mission, how far horizontally (in meters) from the wreckage site must the plane be when dropping the package?

• Read the problem carefully and diagram the physical situation (trajectory diagram)
• Identify known and unknown information in an organized manner (x-y table)
• Take the time to plot out a strategy prior to beginning the solution
• Identify an appropriate formula to use
• Perform step-by-step algebraic manipulations

A discussion of the formulae for projectile motion and of the basic strategy for solving such problems is provided on the Set C Overview Page.

Detailed information about and discussion of the strategies for solving horizontally launched projectile problems is provided online at The Physics Classroom.
