Studying Suggestions for Unit 8a Quiz #1

Your first quiz of the year will be on Thursday, September 12. The quiz will be a one-page quiz, covering both sides of a single sheet of paper. No equations will be provided. You will have to devote the four kinematic equations and all force equations to memory. Other than a calculator, no other helps will be provided nor allowed. Students can expect the following concepts, skills, and problem-types to be assessed on this quiz:

  1. A conceptual understanding of Newton's first law, including the proper belief that forces are not required to maintain an object's motion; an understanding of the role of unbalanced forces in governing the motion of objects.

Newton's First Law || The Big Misconception || Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

  2. An understanding of inertia - its meaning and its relationship to mass and the distinction between mass and weight.

    Inertia and Mass

  3. An ability to relate force-mass-acceleration information in a fill-in-the-blank style question.

Finding Acceleration || Finding Individual Forces

  4. An ability to recognize forces and to draw a free-body diagram which accurately depicts the forces acting upon an object in any given physical situation.

    Drawing Free-Body Diagrams

  5. An ability to read, interpret and solve simple Newton's second law problems (such as those in Problem Set A).

    Finding Acceleration
