Studying Suggestions for Unit 6 Quiz #1 

The first Unit 6 quiz will most likely be on Thursday, March 20. The quiz will be a two-page quiz, covering both sides of the first sheet of paper and the front side of the second sheet of paper. The average speed equation will be given; you will be responsible for any other equations. Students can expect the following concepts, skills, and problem-types to be assessed on this quiz:

  1. An understanding of average speed and average velocity and the ability to carry out an average speed or average velocity calculation. See Minds On Physics - Kinematic Concepts module; sublevels 3 and 6.

  2. An understanding of the terms scalars and vectors, displacement and distance, speed and velocity, and acceleration and an ability to apply such terms to the motion of objects. See Minds On Physics - Kinematic Concepts module; sublevels 1-3.

  3. An understanding of the acceleration concept as a rate at which velocity changes; an ability to identify the direction of the acceleration vector; and an ability to use the equation for acceleration to arrive at a solution to a simple problem.   4. An ability to associate verbal descriptions of motion with pictorial representations and numerical representations. See Minds On Physics - Kinematic Concepts module; sublevels 5 and 8.

  5. An ability to use graphical features such as slope and shape to interpret position-time graphs and ultimately describe the motion of an object.

  6. An ability to perform slope calculations for position-time graphs and to use such calculations to derive quantitative information about an object's motion.
