Suggestions for this week's quiz
(Unit 6, Quiz #2):
This week's quiz on Unit 6
material is tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 28.
The quiz will be a onepage quiz, covering both sides of a
single sheet of paper. The equations for gravitational force
and gravitational acceleration will be provided. Other than
a calculator, no other helps will be provided nor
allowed. Students can expect the following concepts, skills,
and problemtypes to be assessed on this quiz:
A basic understanding of the meaning of Kepler's
three laws.
An understanding of Newton's Universal Law of
Gravitation, including an understanding of Newton's
"apple and the moon" argument, the use of the
equation as a
guide to thinking, and the use of the equation
to solve mathematical problems. Review of class
notes, pp. 2122, and Sections 13 of Chapter 12 of the
Hewitt book would be good prepartion for this portion of
the quiz.
An understanding of the variables effecting the
value of
g, including the use of the equation in mathematical
problemsolving and a "guide to thinking" about the
effect of one variable on another. Review of class notes
and Sections 13 of Chapter 13 of the Hewitt book would
be good prepartion for this portion of the quiz.
An understanding of satellite motion, including the
motion
characteristics of satellites, the energy
relationships of satellites and the
comparison of satellites to projectiles. Review of
class notes and Sections 14 of Chapter 14 of the Hewitt
book would be good prepartion for this portion of the
quiz.
An understanding of the concept of weightlessness,
including an ability to distinguish between weight and
weightlessness and to identify some classic
misconceptions about weightlessness.
Sample Quizzes (Unit 6, Quiz
#2):
There are no sample quizzes
available on the topic of universal gravitation and
satellite motion. Since you took the time to check out this
page, then why not treat yourself to a look at the actual
quiz which you will be taking tomorrow. Click
