Henderson's Regular Physics Quizzes

(1998-99 School Year)


Suggestions for this week's quiz (Unit 14 Quiz):

This week's quiz on Unit 14 material is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 7. The quiz will be a one-page quiz, covering both sides of a single sheet of paper. The equation for Snell's law of refraction will be given; you might be given the critical angle equation. Students will need a protractor and ruler. Other than a calculator, no other helps will be provided nor allowed. Roughly one-half of the quiz will pertain to curved mirror reflection and one-half will pertain to refraction of light. Students can expect the following concepts, skills, and problem-types to be assessed on this quiz:

  1. Use information about the two media on each side of the boundary (e.g., information about the optical density of, the index of refraction of or the speed of light in the two medium) to predict whether a light ray will bend towards or away from the normal at the boundary of the two medium; to construct a refracted ray to express this understanding.
  2. Use Snell's law to determine the angle of refraction at a boundary between two medium (if given the indices of refraction and the angle of incidence); similarly use Snell's law to solve for the fourth parameter if given values of the other three parameters in the equation; interpret the results of such calculations to draw the refracted ray at the appropriate angle.
  3. Use Snell's Law and the path of light through a material to determine the index of refraction of an unknown material.
  4. Define total internal reflection; to decribe the conditions under which it occurs and to use the phenomenon to explain several applications of TIR (artheroscopic surgery, communications, sparkling of diamonds, and periscopes and binoculars).
  5. Define the critical angle and to calculate the critical angle for any combination of media; to interpret critical angle calculations in order to explain what would happen to light when incident towards a boundary at a given angle (greater than, equal to, or less than the critical angle).
