Suggestions for this week's quiz
(Unit 14 Quiz):
This week's quiz on Unit 14 material is tentatively
scheduled for Friday, May 11. The quiz will be a onepage
quiz, covering both sides of a single sheet of paper. The
lens equation and magnification equation will be given.
Students will need a straightedge and a calculator; no
other helps will be provided nor allowed. There
should be no tricks on the quiz (hopefully, there
never are; hard Q's, but no tricks). Review Sections 14 of
Chapter 30 of the Hewitt book and pp. 1926 of your packet.
Use of the links below should also provide suitable help.
Students can expect the following concepts, skills, and
problemtypes to be assessed on this quiz:
 Accurately construct ray diagrams to demonstrate the
location of the image of an object in a
converging lens or a
diverging lens; identify the characteristics
(enlarged or reduced in size, inverted or upright,
virtual or real) of such images.
 Use the
lens equation and the magnification ratio to solve
problems involving object distances and heights, image
distances and heights, and focal lengths for both
converging and diverging lenses; interpret the results of
such diagrams in order to identify the characteristics
(enlarged or reduced in size, inverted or upright,
virtual or real) of such images.
 Use an understanding of objectimage
relations to predict the location of an image if
given a general region for the location of an image;
similarly, to predict the characteristics (enlarged or
reduced in size, inverted or upright, virtual or real) of
such images.
