Henderson's Regular Physics Quizzes

(1998-99 School Year)


Suggestions for this week's quiz (Units 10 and 11, Quiz#1):

This week's quiz on Unit 10 material is tentatively scheduled for Friday, March 12. The quiz will be a one-page quiz, covering both sides of a single sheet of paper. The equations for wave speed, frequency-wavelength-speed and frequency-period relationships will be given. While the equations are given, they won't save your hide; you will need to know your concepts and principles. Other than a calculator, no other helps will be provided nor allowed. Students can expect the following concepts, skills, and problem-types to be assessed on this quiz. The hot links provided for each concept will take you to related instructional materials. (You would be wise to use these links.)

  1. An understanding of the nature of a wave as a periodic and repeating disturbance of a medium which transports energy without the transport of matter.
  2. An understanding of the different ways in which waves can be categorized - such as electromagnetic vs. mechanical and longitudinal vs. transverse; an ability to distinguish between longitudinal and transverse waves.
  3. An understanding of the physical properties of waves such as the amplitude, frequency, period, speed, and wavelength; an ability to perform relatively simple computational problems involving wavelength, frequency, speed, and period.
  4. An understanding of the types of variables which do and do not effect the speed of a wave through a given material; the ability to relate the speed of a wave to the distance and time relationship (particularly for echo problems in which there is a reflection of a wave off a barrier causing its return path to its original position).
  5. An understanding of interference as a behavior which occurs as two waves interfere while moving through the same medium; an ability to distinguish between constructive and destructive interference; an ability to use the principle of superosition in order to determine the resultant shape and size of a wave pattern produced by two interfering waves.
  6. An understanding of the behavior of a pulse at the end of a medium, including free-end and fixed-end reflection and the transmission of a pulse from one medium to another medium with a different density.
  7. An understanding of standing wave patterns including the ability to explain how a standing wave is formed from two individual interfering waves; an ability to diagram standing wave patterns for the first five harmonics of a string which is fixed at both ends; an ability to identify the nodes and anti-nodes in a standing wave pattern and to relate the length of the string to the wavelength of the wave for any given harmonic.
