MISSION STATEMENT

The Glenbrook Off-Campus community believes in the potential of each student and is committed to encouraging individuals to attain personal success through social-emotional skill building and academic instruction.

INTRODUCTION

The Off-Campus program is built on supportive and trusting relationships where expectations are clear and mutual respect is practiced. It needs to be a safe, drug and alcohol free environment where students can progress academically and socially. Cooperation and full support of these expectations allows for trusting relationships which result in the need for fewer rules, fewer conflicts and more positive experiences and opportunities for students and staff.

DEFINITION OF SCHOOL GROUNDS AND SCHOOL DAY

For the purposes of these policies, Glenbrook Off-Campus defines the school day as running from 6am until 5pm on any day school is in session. The school grounds are defined as any place within 1000 feet of the physical school building on a school day. These rules and policies also apply on school field trips, on school provided transportation such as the bus or cab and at special programs in the evenings or weekends.

LANGUAGE

Students at Off-Campus are able and should be expected to show respect and consideration for others. This would include peers and adults of any race, color, creed, disability or gender.

Use of appropriate and respectful language in school offers more opportunities for students to be successful in school, at home, in the community and, in the work place.

Students at Off-Campus are to use appropriate language for a school environment which promotes responsible, respectful and caring interactions.

Inappropriate language includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • any derogatory or put down comments or references to racial or religious groups

  • any references to drug or alcohol terms or use

  • any references to sex or sexual acts

  • use of terms which are offensive, disrespectful, profane or rude

DRESS

Students at Off-Campus are faced with a variety of obstacles which make learning a challenge. Therefore, the school environment should be free of distractions caused by inappropriate school dress and/or accessories in order to provide for optimum learning experiences.

Students at Off-Campus are expected to dress appropriately for a school environment.

Inappropriate clothing or accessories includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Provocative items with offensive language or pictures.

  • Items with language or pictures referring to drugs, alcohol or weapons.

  • Items with inappropriate or profane language.

  • Items with offensive or inappropriate references to any race, religion, ethnicity or gender.

  • Items or other paraphernalia that relate to gangs.

  • Items that relate to sex or sexual conduct.

  • Head coverings may be worn but any head covering with a bill or ties must be wors traight forward or straight back on the head.

  • Clothing that is overly revealing. (i.e. no visible undergarments, skirts and shorts must be linger than the fingertips.)

  • Undershirt style tank tops many not be worn except while exercising in PE class.

USE OF SCHOOL PHONES

Glenbrook Off-Campus maintains one phone for student use. Students who wish to use this phone may do so only with permission. To obtain permission the student must request it of his or her case manager or other appropriate staff.

PHYSICAL CONTACT

Glenbrook Off-Campus students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Students should refrain from public displays of affection. This would include kissing, sitting or lying on another person, excessive hugging or hanging on another person and any unwanted physical contact with another person. Handshakes and high fives are perfectly acceptable .

ACADEMIC HONESTY

 

Students at Glenbrook Off-Campus are expected to be academically honest. All work turned in as their own may not be anyone else’s product. This included copying from another, cutting and pasting from the internet, turning in work complete by another, etc…

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Students at Off-Campus may use personal electronic devices such as Gameboys, Walkmans, Discmans, and MP3 players within their classes as allowed by their teachers. Students may not use these devices in the hallways or at lunch and break times. Teacher have the discretion to decide when the may be used within the classroom as these devices can be disruptive to the learning environment and can block effective communication.  Students may bring them for use on the bus on their way to and from school only. If they are brought to school they will be expected to remain in the classroom until the student’ school day is over.

CELL PHONES AND PAGERS

State law prohibits the use of pagers, cell phones or other communication devices in a school setting. State law does allow them to be carried, but not turned on during the school day. This includes the ride to and from school while on district provided transportation (i.e. bus or  cab.)

SMOKING

Smoking within the school environment is against school board policy* and, is in violation of the law. Students may not smoke at any time during the school day or on school grounds as defined above. Students may not smoke on any school provided transportation including the bus and cab.  Students who drive themselves or who ride with their parents are requested not to smoke until they are off school grounds as defined above. Students who walk into a smoky bathroom are expected to leave that room immediately and inform their case manager of the situation. Students who do not do this will be considered to have violated the smoking policy.

  • Cigarettes or related paraphernalia are not to be in the school building, on one's person, clothing, backpack, book bag, etc.

  • There is to be no exchange of cigarettes or related paraphernalia among students.

DRUGS

Drugs are an illegal substance. Possession, sale, use or references to drugs or drug paraphernalia interferes with a student's ability to succeed in school.

Drug involvement can be separated into three categories: 1) Discussion, 2) Consumption and 3) Possession and/or Sale of drugs. All areas are addressed in the District 225 school handbook.

  • DISCUSSION of DRUGS: Includes any references, drawings, clothing, jewelry, etc. relating to drugs or alcohol.

  • CONSUMPTION OF DRUGS The consumption or appearing under the influence as defined by Board Policy*

  • POSSESSION/SALE OF DRUGS The possession on the student's person, clothing, supplies, automobile, bags, desk, etc...of "illegal substance" as defined by Board Policy * including illegal drugs, alcohol, "look-alike, " paraphernalia (including rolling papers.)

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE

No form of physical violence is tolerated at Glenbrook Off-Campus. Students are expected to keep their hands, bodies, feet and possessions to themselves. If student finds him or herself aggressed against they should seek to preserve their safety only and not seek to do harm to their aggressor.  Any physical altercation will result in suspension from school for a minimum of one day.

BULLYING

Students at Off-Campus should be able to show respect to their peers and adults at all times.  Bullying is defined as verbal, psychological or physical harassment, intimidation ridicule or demeaning actions by or toward any individual or group.  Examples of bullying would include name-calling, spreading rumors, threatening, teasing, mimicking, taking, hiding or breaking a person’s property, extortion, excluding a person and other similar actions. Glenbrook Off-Campus will not tolerate bullying in any form. Any and all acts of bullying will be taken very seriously.

DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY

Students are expected to treat any and all physical property on school grounds with respect and use it in an appropriate manner. If a student damages property the will be expected to repair it, replace it or pay for the repair or replacement.  Where deemed appropriate legal action will be taken against students who willfully damage school property.

UNAUTHORIZED LEAVING OF SCHOOL BUILDING

For the purposes of this issue “leaving school building” would be defined as exiting the physical school building without obtaining permission from an appropriate staff member.

UNAUTHORIZED TRANSPORTATION

Students who wish to drive are required to obtain and follow the Off-Campus driving contract. Students may only drive to school with permission and with a signed driving contract on file. Students may not  ride to or from school with a person other than their normal mode of transportation. Parents, who wish to have a student transported by someone different, must notify the school in advance.
