Varsity Head Coach Coaching: Coach Pieper returns for his 13th season as Varsity Head Coach. Bob was the head coach from 1997-2000 before giving up his head coaching duties to become Athletic Director. Bob took over the head coaching duties again in 2004. Bob lead the Spartans to their first playoff appearances in two decades in 1999, and continued that success the following season with another playoff campaign before stepping down. He was the head football coach at Crete-Monee High School from 1991-96. Playing days: Bob played defensive back at Illinois Benedectine College. He starred in football, wrestling and baseball at Rich South High School. Favorite coach: Vince Lombardi Favorite quote: "Don't just stand there - hit someone!" Associate Head Coach Coaching: This is Matt's 16th year coaching the Spartans, where his specialty is the offensive line Playing days: Matt starred for the University of Iowa, becoming a captain his senior year. After anchoring the Hawkeyes' line, Matt spent part of the 1996 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Defensive Coordinator Coaching: Coach "Geo" returns for his ninth campaign with the Spartans. He takes over as defensive coordinator this year, in addition to focusing on the defensive line and assisting with the offensive linemen. Playing days: A four-year starter at Augustana College, Justin earned all-conference and all-regional honors. Also played on the Augustana Rugby Club. Played football, wrestling and lacrosse through high school at GBN. Graduated in 2000. Assistant Varsity Coach Coaching: Mike begins his 16th year with the varsity after coaching stints at St. Andrew Grammar School (two years), St. Francis de Sales (six years) and Thornton Fractional North (two years). He is responsible for special teams, receivers and defensive backs. Playing days: Mike excelled at Eureka College, earning all-conference honors as a tight end after beginning at Joliet Junior College. He was a three sport athlete at St. Francis de Sales before graduating in 1981. Favorite coach: Woody Hayes, The Ohio State University Favorite quote: "Outlined against a blue-gray October sky..." Favorite college team: University of Notre Dame Favorite pastimes: Traveling in his RV, as well as collecting baseball cards and autographs of baseball Hall of Famers and Heisman Trophy winners. Personal: Married to wife Mia for ten years, Mike and Mia are proud parents of children Faith and Travis. Assistant Varsity Coach Coaching: Scott is beginning his 19th season at GBN, where he has served at a variety of levels and positions. Playing days: Scott was a standout defensive end at Proviso West High School, earning all-conference accolades his senior year. Until recently, Scott held the state record for most sacks in a game with six. Favorite coach: Randy Walker, Northwestern University Favorite quote: "Everybody wants success. Head Sophomore Coach Coaching: Matt is beginning his 15th year at GBN, and his 18th year overall. Prior to GBN, Matt served as the Freshman Head Coach and Sophomore Defensive Coordinator at Crete-Monee High School. Matt is also an assistant in the basketball program at GBN. Playing days: Matt was an All-Area defensive back at Crete-Monee in the mid 80's. He also excelled in basketball and track. Favorite coach: My father, Neale Miller, who taught me how to scout, work with students and modeled the work ethic that all coaches and educators need to be successful. Assistant Sophomore Coach Coaching: This is John's 21st year coaching football at GBN. John has served in a variety of positions, including Varsity Defensive Coordinator for four years. Playing days: After a fine career as a football and rugby athlete at Loyola Academy, John walked on as a linebacker at the University of Illinois. Assistant Sophomore Coach Coaching: Coach Brandt returns for a ninthyear with the Spartans. Ernie also served as Varsity Defensive Coordinator for Saint Joseph High School in Westchester. Playing days: Ernie was a multi-sport athlete at Loyola Academy. Assistant Sophomore Coach Coaching: Tim begins his 15th year at GBN. He has back with the Sophomores after 11 years of being the Freshmen A Offensive Coordinator. He has coached baseball and softball at GBN, as well as baseball and football at Grayslake High School from 1996-1999. Playing days: Tim played for two-time 6A semifinalist Buffalo Grove High School from 1982-1986, before an injury ended his playing career. He was a football, basketball and baseball athlete at B.G., before playing baseball at DePaul University. Head Freshman Coach Coaching: This is Coach Runkle's second year with the GBN football program, after previously coaching for five years with Highland Park High School. He is the head boys swimming coach for GBN. Playing days: Josh was a two-year varsity letter winner for Peoria Richwoods, and garnered a state championship ring in 1988. He was also a two-year varsity letter winner in track. Assistant Freshmen Coach Coaching: Third year at GBN. He is also the Head Boys Frosh/Soph Lacrosse Coach. Playing days: Two year starting QB GBN '99-'00, two time All-Conference selection, school record 23 TD passes in career, accounted for 21 total TD's during senior season (15 passing/6 rushing), overall record as starter 17-4. State track qualifier in 4x1 and 4x2 relays, two time All-Conference selection. Assistant Freshmen Coach Coaching: This is Scott's 4th year coaching football at GBN. He is also the head Boys Track and Field coach. Playing Days: Scott played Football for GBN before an injury sidelined him and also ran for the Track and Field team, achieving All-Conference honors in his senior year. Graduated in 2004. Head Freshman B Coach Coaching: Mark has coached at all levels at GBN during his 21 years here. He began his coaching career at Gordon Tech, and then moved on to Loyola Academy, totaling 10 years at those institutions. Mark is the head Wrestling and head Boys Water Polo coach. Playing days: Mark played football and wrestled for the Loyola Academy Ramblers, and then continued his grappling career at Cornell College in Iowa. Assistant Freshman B Coach Coaching: This is Jim's 26th year at GBN, and 31st year coaching overall. Jim also serves as assistant baseball coach at GBN. Playing days: Jim pitched for Northern Illinois University after excelling in football, basketball and baseball at Crystal Lake Community High School.
