Varsity Head Coach

Coaching: Coach Pieper returns for his 14th season as the Varsity Head Coach at Glenbrook North, and his 19th overall. Bob was the head coach from 1997-2000 before giving up his head coaching duties to become Athletic Director. Bob took over the head coaching duties again in 2004. Bob lead the Spartans to their first playoff appearances in two decades in 1999, and the Spartans have continued that success with 8 Conference Championships, and 10 Playoff appearances since 1999.  Bob was the head football coach at Crete-Monee High School from 1991-96.

Playing days:    Bob played defensive back at Illinois Benedectine College.  He starred in football, wrestling and baseball at Rich South High School.

mp Matt Purdy

Associate Head Coach

Coaching:     This is Matt's 17th year coaching the Spartans, where his specialty is the offensive line.  

Playing days:     Matt starred for the University of Iowa, becoming a captain his senior year.  After anchoring the Hawkeyes' line, Matt spent part of the 1996 season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Assistant Varsity Coach

Coaching:      Coach Brandt returns for a tenth year with the Spartans.  Ernie also served as Varsity Defensive Coordinator for Saint Joseph High School in Westchester. Coach Brandt moves to the Varsity level this year after spending the last few years with the underlevels.

Playing days:  Ernie was a multi-sport athlete at Loyola Academy.

geoJustin Georgacakis

Defensive Coordinator

Coaching: Coach "Geo" returns for his tenth campaign with the Spartans.  He will coordinate the defense this year, in addition to focusing on the defensive line and assisting with the offensive linemen. He is also the Head Varsity Lacrosse coach, where he was named Illinois Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.

Playing days: A four-year starter at Augustana College, Justin earned all-conference and all-regional honors. Also played on the Augustana Rugby Club. Played football, wrestling and lacrosse through high school at GBN. Graduated in 2000.

Favorite pastimes:  Spending time with my family at the zoo, and playing the Nintendo Wii.  Many moonlit nights in front of the fire pit, as the children play in the yard.

Personal: Justin and wife Ali have a loving relationship with their boys, Cheydon, Everett and Declan, as well as two guinea pigs, Valentine and Michaelangelo.

Assistant Varsity Coach

Coaching: Mike is entering his 1st season coaching at GBN, where he will be assisting with the offensive and defensive lines.

Playing days: After a successful athletic career at GBS, Mike earned a scholarship and played as a Tight End and Offensive Lineman at the University of Illinois from 2005-2009.

Coaching:  Dom is beginning his 3rd year with the Spartans after coaching at Niles North for twelve years and Notre Dame for one season.

Playing days:  Coach Savino played football and baseball at Elk Grove High School.

msMike Standerski

Assistant Varsity Coach

Coaching:    Mike begins his 17th year with the varsity after coaching stints at St. Andrew Grammar School (two years), St. Francis de Sales (six years) and Thornton Fractional North (two years).  He is responsible for special teams, receivers and defensive backs.  

Playing days:    Mike excelled at Eureka College, earning all-conference honors as a tight end after beginning at Joliet Junior College.  He was a three sport athlete at St. Francis de Sales before graduating in 1981.

Favorite pastimes:    Traveling in his RV, as well as collecting baseball cards and autographs of baseball Hall of Famers and Heisman Trophy winners.

mmMatt Miller

Head Sophomore Coach

Coaching:     Matt is beginning his 16th year at GBN, and his 19th year overall.  Prior to GBN, Matt served as the Freshman Head Coach and Sophomore Defensive Coordinator at Crete-Monee High School.  Matt is also an assistant in the basketball program at GBN. 

Playing days:     Matt was an All-Area defensive back at Crete-Monee in the mid 80's.  He also excelled in basketball and track.

Favorite coach:       My father, Neale Miller, who taught me how to scout, work with students and modeled the work ethic that all coaches and educators need to be successful.

Coaching:  This is John's 22nd year coaching football at GBN.  John has served in a variety of positions, including Varsity Defensive Coordinator for four years.  

Playing days:   After a fine career as a football and rugby athlete at Loyola Academy, John walked on as a linebacker at the University of Illinois.

Assistant Sophomore Coach


Tim begins his 15th year at GBN.  He is with the Sophomores again after 10 years of being the Freshmen A Offensive Coordinator.  He has coached baseball and softball at GBN, as well as baseball and football at Grayslake High School from 1996-1999.

Playing days:  Tim played for two-time 6A semifinalist Buffalo Grove High School from 1983-1986, before an injury ended his playing career.  He played football, basketball and baseball at B.G., before playing baseball at DePaul University.

Jason Newburger

Assistant Sophomore Coach

Coaching: This is Jason's 3rd year coaching high school football. It is his 1st year at Glenbrook North and his 1st year at the Sophomore level. Prior to GBN, he spent two years at Vernon Hills High School as the Varsity QB Coach.

Playing Days: Jason played football for Vernon Hills High School in 2000-2001 and was an All-State quarterback in both his Junior and Senior seasons. He led the Cougars to the State Quarterfinals in 2001. He also played basketball and baseball at Vernon Hills and went onto play four years of college baseball at Bradley University.

Favorite Pastimes: Prior to returning to high school sports and education, Jason owned and managed Chicagoland Property Group, LLC, a residential real estate brokerage in Chicago. He still actively competes in 12" softball in the Lake County area and enjoys traveling and hanging out with his family and friends.



Justin Weiner

Assistant Sophomore Coach

Coaching: This is Justin's 2nd year coaching football at GBN and first at the sophomore level. He coached varsity in 2009 and also coaches varsity baseball.

Playing Days: Justin played varsity football for GBN in 2003-2004 and was a two-way starter his senior year for the '04 state quarterfinal team. He also played baseball at GBN and went onto play four years of college baseball at DePauw University.

Favorite Pastimes: Prior to joining the GBN coaching staff, Justin spent three years as the Executive Producer of Sports Programming and co-host of the high school football wrap-up show "Preps Plus Chicago" for WGN Radio. He also currently serves as the radio/TV play-by-play voice for the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames. He also enjoys 12"/16" softball leagues, spending time with my family, water sports and golf.

Assistant Sophomore Coach

Coaching:  Scott is beginning his 20th season at GBN, where he has served at a variety of levels and positions.

Playing days:  Scott was a standout defensive end at Proviso West High School, earning all-conference accolades his senior year.  Until recently, Scott held the state record for most sacks in a game with six.

Favorite coach:       Randy Walker, Northwestern University

runksJosh Runkle

Head Freshman Coach

Coaching:  This is Coach Runkle's third year with the GBN football program, after previously coaching for five years with Highland Park High School. He is the head boys swimming coach for GBN.

Playing days: Josh was a two-year varsity letter winner for Peoria Richwoods, and garnered a state championship ring in 1988. He was also a two-year varsity letter winner in track.

mhMatthew Haggis

Assistant Freshmen Coach

Coaching: This is Coach Haggis' fourth year at GBN. He is also the Head Boys Frosh/Soph Lacrosse Coach.

Playing days: Two-year starting QB at GBN in 1999-2000, two time All-Conference selection, school record 23 TD passes in career, accounted for 21 total TD's during senior season (15 passing/6 rushing), overall record as starter 17-4, and 2001 co-MVP. State track qualifier in 4x1 and 4x2 relays, two time All-Conference selection.

Assistant Freshmen Coach

Coaching: This is Scott's 5th year coaching football at GBN. He is also the head Boys Track and Field coach.

Playing Days: Scott played football for GBN before an injury sidelined him. He also ran for the track and field team, achieving All-Conference honors in his senior year. Graduated in 2004.

mr Mark Rebora

Head Freshman B Coach

Coaching:     Mark has coached at all levels at GBN during his 22 years here.  He began his coaching career at Gordon Tech, and then moved on to Loyola Academy, totaling 10 years at those institutions.  Mark is the head Wrestling and head Boys Water Polo coach.

Playing days:     Mark played football and wrestled for the Loyola Academy Ramblers, and then continued his grappling career at Cornell College in Iowa.
